The Vice President of Legal Affairs is the General Counsel and General Counsel of the University of Texas at Austin, as well as President, Trustee, Faculty and Staff when acting in the course of his or her employment. The Vice-President is also Chief Ethics Officer. Tom is a General Officer of the Board of Governors and the University, and acts as legal counsel to the Board of Governors, the President and other administrative officers of the University. Guardian: In Guardian mode, you need to lead the company`s legal and regulatory affairs, manage complexity while minimizing risk. This is the core responsibility of the role of Chief Legal Officer and the in-house legal team. Brian White is general counsel and vice chancellor of legal affairs at the University of Kansas. In this role, Brian is responsible for providing strategic legal advice and coordinating the delivery of legal services in all areas of law affecting the University. Brian joined KU in August 2018. Brian joins KU from UCONN Health in Farmington, Connecticut, where he was the first Chief Attorney.

Previously, he served as Assistant General Counsel and Acting Vice President of Facilities and Support Services at UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin. Brian began practicing as in-house counsel at the University of Iowa, where he served as senior associate director and legal counsel for the University of Iowa Healthcare. Brian`s private legal experience includes his work as a partner at the Chicago law firm of Boundas, Skarzynski, Walsh & Black. Brian graduated from the University of Iowa School of Law, where he was editor-in-chief of the Journal of Corporation Law. Brian is an active member of the American Health Lawyer`s Association, Vice Chair of the In-House Practice Group, the National Association of College and University Attorneys, and Vice Chair of the Vizient/UHC Legal and Compliance Practice Group. UC Legal – The Office of the General Counsel (UCL) provides legal services to the University, including advocacy, advice, research and training. We also prepare legal opinions for the Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, staff and others acting on behalf of the University. We report jointly to the Board of Directors and the President. Our mission is to provide quality service and leadership in the proactive management and coordination of academic law issues. support and enhance the University`s education, research, public mission, fundamental purpose and core values; and advance the overall mission of the university by: Priorities often have components that touch on more than one face. For example, the priority of «aligning legal priorities and resources with corporate strategy» may include elements of the strategist`s role that understand (and potentially influence) the company`s strategy and its relationship to the legal department`s strategy. It can also address the role of the operator and implement processes and procedures for the legal team to help them adapt.

Catalyst: A catalyst provides a competitive advantage by providing the legal perspective and critical advice needed to facilitate the management team`s ability to choose the right path forward and set the tone at the top of the company. This includes bringing a legal and ethical perspective and strategies to university decision-making and planning; Development of strategies and consultation on creative ways to establish and promote academic programs and cooperation on campus, in our state, nationally and internationally; resolution of legal issues; providing training on legal issues; University-wide representation on committees; provide further legal and ethical advice, guidance and representation; litigation management; managing the use of outside counsel; Representation of the university in national and state discussions on legal and policy issues; and in collaboration with the UT General Counsel`s Office and the Attorney General`s Office. If there isn`t already a strong legal operations manager, finding one should be a top priority. If we checked a year after an OCOL took over a legal department, the biggest regret is that we didn`t make talent decisions sooner – putting the right people in the right role, realigning the team, or separating people who are difficult or whose skills don`t match the department`s needs. The role of today`s Chief Legal Officer is complex and requires much more than expertise in legal operations. To succeed, an OCOL must master and find the right balance between «four faces»: strategist, catalyst, goalkeeper and operator. Scott represents and advises the University`s Legal Counsel in the administration of legal services to the Board of Governors, the President, University officials and the University`s three campuses. Today`s Chief Legal Officer (CLO) is multidimensional and no longer just an extraordinary legal tactician. An OCOL is also a strategic thinker and senior executive who operates at the highest and most influential level of the company.

To succeed in the role of Chief Legal Counsel, an OCOL must divide their time between «four faces»: strategist, catalyst, tutor and operator. The Academic Office advises the University on various legal matters. This legal advice covers a very wide range of topics. Lawyers and staff include specialists with unique skills and training on specific topics, as well as «generalists» who are familiar with various legal and policy areas. Our office does not represent university administrators, faculty, staff, students or individuals in personal legal matters. Indiana University has recruited Barnes & Thornburg alumnus and partner Anthony Prather, an experienced labor and employment litigation attorney, as vice president and chief legal counsel following the expulsion of the school`s former senior counsel. As a summa laude graduate of Bowdoin College, Ms. Kirby received her Ed.M. in Educational Management and Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and his J.D. magna laude from Northwestern University School of Law. Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel, Ms. Kirby was Assistant General Counsel at Northeastern University, where she advised on a variety of matters, including faculty and student affairs, employment and litigation.

Ms. Kirby began her legal career at Foley Hoag LLP, where she worked in the litigation department and represented academic clients.
