Human Rights Legal Resource Centre

CMIJ`s thematic research guides identify and explain treaties and jurisprudence relating to specific human rights, from education to non-discrimination. Nalinaksha joined the Resource Centre in June 2022 as an intern in South Asia. She is currently in her final year of studies at Rajiv Gandhi National Law University, Patiala with honors in Political Science and specialization in International Law. Nalinaksha has a keen interest in commercial and human rights law and is passionate about the intersection of the two fields. She has interned with leading commercial law firms in India and various human rights organizations including the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Oxfam India. Rosie Monaghan, researcher and representative of KnowTheChain (based in London)Rosie joined the research center in June 2017 as a KnowTheChain research assistant. She supports the research methodology for KnowTheChain and conducts research and analysis on modern slavery claims, corporate disclosures, and allegations of forced labor. She holds a Master`s degree in International Human Rights Law from the Irish Centre for Human Rights and a Law Degree from Oxford Brookes University. Her academic research focuses on the legal protection of victims of human trafficking and human rights due diligence as a tool to combat slavery in supply chains. Previously, Rosie interned at the Equal Rights Trust and supported the Trust`s litigation and advocacy programmes. the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants; and volunteer as a researcher at the Sophie Hayes Foundation. Rosie is a British citizen. Jessie Cato, Natural Resources and Human Rights Program Manager (based in Berlin)Jessie has been with the Resource Centre since August 2020.

She is responsible for coordinating natural resource work, including leading renewable energy and transition minerals projects, while supporting the broader work of the Resource Centre on Human Rights in the Extractive and Other Natural Resource Sectors. Jessie has extensive experience in natural resource governance and worked at Oxfam America before joining the Resource Centre, where she coordinated the Extractive Industries Knowledge Hub. She was Country Director of Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Australia from 2015 to 2019 and served as a civil society representative on the Australian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) multi-stakeholder group from 2016 to 2019. Jessie has also worked in Timor-Leste as a Gender Equality Officer for Seeds of Life and as a Ministerial Advisor to the South Australian Government, responsible for the Regional Development, State-Local Government Relations and Women`s Affairs portfolios. Jessie holds a Bachelor of Social Science from the University of Adelaide and has trained in natural resource governance at the Central European University (CEU), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and the University of Queensland. She is a dual Australian and British citizen. Prior to joining the Centre, Merav worked for over 10 years in resource development for human rights organisations funded by the UN, EU, bilateral and multilateral donors in various organisational contexts. She was responsible for fundraising and grant management, donor administration and fundraising advocacy. Manson Gwanyanya, Researcher and Regional Representative for Southern and Anglophone West Africa (based in Johannesburg)Manson Gwanyanya completed his legal internship at the Legal Resources Centre («LRC») office in Johannesburg in December 2018 and then officially joined the Resource Centre. Previously, he worked as a legal researcher in the same organization at the Department of Migration and Refugees. His previous experience also includes a junior researcher in the Socio and Economic Rights (ESR) Programme of the South African Human Rights Commission and a part-time lecturer at Wits Law School. Manson received his LLB (Bachelor of Laws) LLM (Master) in Corporate Law and a Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Law from Wits University in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Between 2012 and 2014, he also worked as a research and teaching associate and part-time lecturer at Wits University, where he taught a number of undergraduate courses, including constitutional law, tort, business units and insolvency law. Manson has a strong passion for human rights law in general and access to justice for the poor and marginalized in particular. Aliou Diouf, French-speaking explorer of Africa and representative (based in Dakar) @aldioufy Aliou Diouf joined the Resource Centre in 2009. He is responsible for research and outreach in Francophone Africa, including meetings and conferences in the region. He has led research missions for the Resource Centre in the Republic of Congo, Guinea, Niger and Senegal (Kedougou region). He is a lawyer and human rights activist. Previously, he worked as a legal adviser in Geneva for human rights; as a research project manager for the Office for Combating Domestic Violence in Geneva and as a social worker in a refugee home in Geneva. Aliou also worked as a legal intern for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and interned at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva. Elodie Aba, Senior Legal Researcher (based in France) @cla_bhrrcElodie at the Resource Centre since January 2013. She conducts research for the Corporate Legal Accountability project as well as other economic and human rights topics.

Elodie is a human rights lawyer and legal translator. She was a researcher at One World Trust and previously worked at Handicap International UK. She also completed internships in the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia; the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; and International Service for Human Rights. Elodie holds a Master of Laws (LL.M) from the University of Melbourne; a degree in international and European law from the University of Paris XI; degree in legal translation from the Higher Institute of Interpretation and Translation (ISIT). Her mother tongue is French and she is fluent in English and some Spanish. Elodie is a French citizen. Jolan joined the Resource Centre in October 2022 as a Legal Research Intern as part of the Corporate Legal Accountability project. Between 2017 and 2018, she worked for the Palestinian Ministry of Local Government, overseeing the work of communities and village councils to ensure compliance with applicable frameworks and regulations, and overseeing the implementation of a nationwide sustainable development agenda. She also worked for the Palestinian Institute for Economic Policy Research, where she worked on various research projects on start-ups and public revenues, as well as on the analysis of food security in the Palestinian territories, among others.

Amy Sinclair, Principal Investigator and Representative for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific and Acting Director of KnowTheChain (based in Sydney) @AmyJSinclairAmy joined the Resource Centre in January 2017 as the first Regional Representative and Researcher for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. She is an international lawyer, researcher and consultant working in the non-profit sector to promote respect for human rights in business. Michael joined the Resource Centre in March 2022. She came directly from Lawyers for Human Rights in South Africa, where she was a Program Manager, but also served as Executive Director for three years until March 2022 and before that Program Manager for three years. In these roles, Michael has led powerful national advocacy and litigation cases related to corporate abuses over natural resources and raw materials, as well as labor law cases with unions. In addition to this national focus, Michael led the creation of an international research and advocacy program aimed at transforming international regulatory norms, including leadership on the future of the binding international treaty. This involved both pan-African and global advocacy strategies. Our website is available in nine languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Our regional researchers are based in Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Japan, Kenya, Jordan, Mexico, Myanmar, Philippines, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States. They draw global attention to the impact (positive and negative) of business on human rights in their region, seek answers from businesses when civil society raises concerns, and establish close contacts with local NGOs, local businessmen and others.
