Nsw Youth Legal Aid

We provide legal advice and other support to homeless and disadvantaged youth under the age of 25. Lawstuff / National Child and Youth Law Centrewww.lawstuff.org.au This is a fantastic legal information site for young people. It includes information and fact sheets on everything from car accidents, cell phones, bullying, social security/centrelink, tattoos, problems at school, etc. You can also contact legal questions by email, to which a lawyer will respond. There is a legal helpline for young people. You can better understand whether or not you should talk to the police. It depends on how many problems you`ve had so far and why you were arrested this time. A warning is a formal warning. This applies to more serious crimes.

To be entitled to a warning, the minor must admit the crime and want to be treated with a warning. This should only be done when a young person has received legal advice by calling the Youth Protection Hotline. The hotline is an important element of the Young Offenders Act 1997, which allows young people to make confessions after being counselled by the police, then notified by the police or referred to juvenile court conferences, rather than being charged and tried for crimes. Sometimes we can help young people who are not homeless or disadvantaged, but who are having difficulty finding legal aid elsewhere. Community legal centres are independent non-governmental organizations that provide free legal aid to individuals and communities when it is most needed. Contact the Law Society of NSW Solicitor Referral Service for help finding a private law firm. Please note that this mediation service is NOT for free legal aid – you will receive contact details of private law firms. Most often, private law firms or lawyers charge money for their services. There are a wide range of websites, apps, and phone services that offer free legal information that you can use without – or first – consulting a lawyer.

These can be helpful if you want to research your options or understand a common legal issue. There are forty municipal law centres in New South Wales. Community law centers can help with a range of issues, including family law, domestic violence, debts, fines, leases, discrimination, loans, insurance, centerlink, and more. The Shopfront Youth Legal Centre offers free legal assistance to homeless and disadvantaged youth under the age of 25. We are based in Sydney`s city centre, but can also help young people outside this region. For more information on legal issues for minors, visit Lawstuff`s website. A juvenile may be referred to a juvenile justice conference if there are more serious crimes or if no other warning is available. The decision to hold a conference may be made by the police (usually a youth officer) or the court. As with a warning, the teen must first admit the crime after seeking advice from the Youth Helpline for legal assistance. If a juvenile admits the crime and is referred to a juvenile justice conference, he or she must attend the conference, which may be attended by a supporter such as a parent, a juvenile court official, a police representative and the victim. The youth and victim must then agree on an outcome plan to compensate for the harm suffered by the victim and the community. We are a service based in New South Wales and cannot provide legal advice on interstate matters, but we may be able to refer clients to interstate legal services.
